2. 2026 Exam Structure & Marking
The UPSC recruitment process is a three-stage filter spanning almost a full year:
Stage I: Preliminary Examination (Objective)
- GS Paper I: 200 Marks (Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity). Determines the cut-off.
- GS Paper II (CSAT): 200 Marks (Maths, Reasoning, Comprehension). Qualifying only (33%).
Stage II: Mains Examination (Written/Descriptive)
Total of 9 Papers (1750 Marks). Only candidates who clear Mains are called for the Interview.
- Essay: 250 Marks.
- GS I, II, III, IV (Ethics): 250 Marks each.
- Optional Subject (2 Papers): 250 Marks each.

Stage III: Personality Test (Interview)
